Model Boating Pond

The Model Boating Pond in Hampstead Heath is meant to be closed to the public

• THE island in the Model Boating Pond, Hampstead Heath, is closed to the public and since it was created in 2016 it has become a refuge for birds which use it as a safe place to rest and to find food.

There is a public notice in full view which states quite clearly that the public have no access. A fence has been in place for some time to make it clear.

On a beautiful sunny afternoon it was rather depressing to see (pictured above) that a species of a different kind has started to ignore the sign; people who can read but are too selfish to observe the advice and only care to enjoy themselves trampling on wildflowers and disturbing wildlife.

The people I saw there picnicking were not only doing their best to give a public spectacle of defiance of the rules but were, by implication, encouraging others to do the same. “Look at us!”

I have no doubt that unless the authorities who manage the park intervene at this early stage more people will start using the island that up till now has been so well-guarded and treated with respect; and ultimately succeed in destroying this wonderful addition to the beauty of Hampstead Heath.
